GREEN PROCUREMENT POLICY: GOVERNMENT’S LEADERSHIP TO DRIVE THE CHANGE IN BUSINESSES

Consumption of ‘green and environment friendly material’ by all Government offices can be initiated. As Government is a significant consumer, regular suppliers will have to start environment friendly production and operations as they would not be able to afford losing business. Thus, ‘green procurement policy’ shall be made mandatory.
Continuous under-utilisation of resources lead to voluminous unaccounted losses in MSMEs. Thus, ‘greening the MSMEs’ (majority supply chain), is of prime importance. Implementation of ‘Green procurement policy’ will help greening the MSMEs, the supply chain of large manufacturers, enhance 5Rs and will result into ‘production with natural / minimum resources’. Green Product Suppliers can be recognised by the Government. This will act as motivational factor or as incentive for suppliers. Besides, tax benefit can be extended to green suppliers, ‘green economic zones (GEZ) can be established where all environment friendly product producers can establish their plants. Financial benefits (in form of reduced tax) and easily available consent to operate, will be a stimulating factor for businesses to operate green.
